Billionaire hedge fund manager buys stegosaurus fossil for a record $446 million
Griffin's latest dinosaur purchase is the most expensive fossil ever sold
The stegosaurus, named Apex, is nearly complete and will be displayed at the Field Museum in Chicago
Billionaire hedge fund manager Kenneth Griffin recently turned heads when he was revealed to be the buyer of a one-of-a-kind stegosaurus. The fossil, named Apex, was sold at auction at Sotheby's in New York on July 10, 2024, for a record-breaking $446 million.
Apex is the latest dinosaur fossil to be bought by Mr. Griffin. In 2018, he gave $165 million to the Field Museum in Chicago to fund the display of Sue, the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found. Apex will also be displayed at the Field Museum.
"This is an extraordinary fossil," said James Hyslop, Sotheby's head of science and natural history. "It is the most complete stegosaurus skeleton ever found, and it is one of the most iconic dinosaurs in the world. We are thrilled that it will be going to the Field Museum, where it will be enjoyed by millions of people for years to come."
