Summer Sun Safety Tips for Kids

Keep Your Kids Safe in the Sun

Follow these tips to make sure your kids have fun in the sun without getting sunburned

Summer is a time to enjoy the outdoors, but it's important to protect your kids from the sun's harmful UV rays. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage skin and lead to skin cancer.

But don't worry! There are plenty of ways to keep your kids safe in the sun this summer without having to stay indoors all day. Here are a few tips:

  • Apply sunscreen liberally and often. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply it every two hours, or more often if your child is sweating or swimming.
  • Cover up your kids. Have your kids wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a hat when they're outdoors. Choose clothing made of tightly-woven fabrics, such as cotton or linen.
  • Seek shade. Avoid being in direct sunlight during the peak hours of 10am to 4pm. If you can't find shade, create your own by using a beach umbrella or canopy.
  • Take breaks from the sun. Come inside every 20-30 minutes to cool down and reapply sunscreen.
  • Hydrate. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially when you're spending time outdoors in the heat.

By following these tips, you can help keep your kids safe and healthy all summer long!
