Orthodox Easter 2025: Date and Significance

Eastern Orthodox Churches Celebrate Easter on April 20, 2025

Orthodox churches across the world will celebrate Easter on Sunday, April 20, 2025. This date differs from the Easter dates observed by Western Christian churches, which follow the Gregorian calendar. Orthodox churches base their Easter date on the Julian calendar, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar. As a result, Orthodox Easter typically falls later than Western Easter.

Significance of Orthodox Easter

Easter is the most important holiday in the Orthodox Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Orthodox churches prepare for Easter with a 40-day period of fasting and prayer, known as Great Lent.

On Easter Sunday, Orthodox churches hold special services that include the reading of the Gospel, the singing of hymns, and the distribution of communion. Orthodox Christians also celebrate Easter with traditional foods, such as Pascha (a sweet bread) and colored eggs.
