Taxpayers Should Prepare Now for January 24th Start Date
Important Information About Due Dates and Filing Extensions
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that the 2022 tax season will officially begin on Monday, January 24th, 2022. On this date, the IRS will begin accepting and processing tax returns from taxpayers across the country.
Taxpayers are encouraged to begin gathering their tax documents and preparing their returns in advance of the January 24th start date. The IRS provides a wealth of resources and tools on its website to assist taxpayers with the filing process, including information about due dates, extensions, and various tax credits and deductions.
For most taxpayers, the deadline to file their 2021 tax returns is April 18th, 2023. However, certain circumstances may warrant an extension of time to file. Taxpayers who need additional time can request an extension by filing Form 4868 with the IRS.
The IRS also reminds taxpayers that they can make estimated tax payments throughout the year to avoid owing a large balance when their tax return is due. The estimated tax payment deadline for the first quarter of 2022 is April 18th, 2023.
